No new traffic lights to be installed in Huron
Posted: Wednesday, Jun 4th, 2008

Traffic lights at Highway 37 and 27th Street on the south end of Huron at one of the entrances and exits to Wal-Mart, Runnings Farm & Fleet and stores in the Dakota Market Place strip mall are not in the cards, at least for now.

Earlier this year, the City Commission adopted a resolution requesting the state Department of Transportation to consider installing the lights.

In a letter to the board read Monday evening by Commissioner Kerwin Haeder, the Aberdeen region traffic specialist said the DOT is monitoring the situation.

“We have reviewed accidents, traffic volumes and vehicle speeds along the segment of highway from 21st Street south to 27th Street,” said Alan Petrich.

“When traffic volumes at 27th Street meet traffic signal warrants and a highway capacity analysis justifies traffic signals, we will move forward with the process of traffic signal installation,” he said.

In another update, Haeder said permanent lighting from 21st to 27th streets along Highway 37 is on the DOT’s list of pending projects, but is several years away. Renting lights is not economically feasible.

Commissioners approved a letter of support for a pandemic influenza grant application to be submitted by Beadle County to the state. The application will be for $30,000 to develop a plan. Beadle County is one of a few counties in the state that doesn’t have a pandemic influenza plan in place, said Commissioner Pat Haley.

Meanwhile, commissioners approved two resignations, five appointments and 12 reappointments to various city boards and committees effective immediately.

Here is the list:

• Airport Board — Reappointed Larry Picek.

• Civil Service Board — Reappointed Dick Shelton.

• Community Improvement Committee — Accepted the resignation of Burhan Al-Tahtamouni and appointed Nichole Yost to serve the remainder of the term. Accepted the resignation of Steven Luke and appointed Deb Smith to serve the remainder of the term. Reappointed Deanna Jones.

Commissioners approved variance applications filed by Wachovia Securities: A.G. Edwards, 875 Dakota Ave. S., to install 66 total square feet of signage; HB Telco Federal Credit Union, project address 375 Third St. S.W., to have a drive-up window and a canopy on the west side of the building; and Larry and Peggy Bockorny to construct a new home at 1995 Illinois Ave. S.W. that will be closer to the property lines than allowed.

In other business, commissioners:

• Approved home occupation permit applications filed by Dan Leichtenberg, 65 Prospect Drive, to operate a lawn care business and April Pimentel, 839 Frank Ave. S.E., to have a siding and painting business.
