ROGER KASA/PLAINSMAN Brian Hull of Tulare holds two CDs he recently released through a producer in Aberdeen. One is entitled, “Happy Holidays,” and the other, “Inspirational Favorites.” The CDs are currently on sale in Redfield and Tulare.
TULARE — Some people may refer to him as “the singing janitor.”

But Brian Hull of Tulare is much more than that.

He has been singing for many years, played in a dance band for 20 years and performs for the praise team in his church in Tulare.

A year ago, he released a compact disc, “Inspirational Favorites,” and a month ago added another, “Happy Holidays.”

The latest CD includes a number of familiar Christmas carols such as “Silent Night,” “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” Winter Wonderland” and “Silver Bells.”

After graduating from Tulare High School in 1972, Hull attended Brown Institute in Minneapolis. He landed a job with KKWA in Aberdeen, remaining one year.

Later, he operated a gas station in Tulare and, for the past 23 years, has been the custodian at the Tulare school.

At the school, he also directs all the class plays.

For 20 years, he played in the Cottonwood dance band. He played the bass and rhythm guitar.

The band has played in South Dakota, North Dakota and Minnesota. They are booked for dances, clubs and anniversaries.

“I’ve been singing since I was a teen,” he said.

Hull frequently sings at weddings and funerals. He has sung the national anthem several times at the races in Huron.

Hull has had the lead role in a number of musicals in Redfield.

The praise band at the Tulare United Church consists of Peg Brooker, rhythm guitar, and Tammy Nowell, Diane Tipton and Robin Jens, all on keyboard.

He said Peg and Tammy also sing with him.

As for the CDs, he said several people asked him to have one published.

“So I thought no better time than the present,” he said.

The CDs were done by Gordy Zens of Aberdeen.

Hull said preliminary sales “are going pretty good.”

Will he do another CD?

“We’ll see how it goes,” he said, “Maybe in the future.”

Hull said he took voice lessons from Eunice Miller, his high school vocal teacher.

“I enjoy singing and playing in bands with other people,” he said. When asked about his favorite kind of music, he listed country, contemporary gospel and pop.

“I even enjoy some of the old songs,” he said.

Hull, 53, has been singing for 40 years.

“My greatest satisfaction is when you can make someone feel that you are singing to them,” he said.

He and his wife, Pam, have six children — Tracey Robinson, Sioux Falls; Tony Watson, Redfield; Troy Watson, Henry; Travis Watson, Bismarck, N.D.; Tiffany Hull, Aberdeen; and Tasha Hull, at home. Tasha currently is the assistant girls’ basketball coach for Hitchcock-Tulare and is a substitute teacher. His wife is the postmaster in Ashton.
