Residents who are in violation of codes pertaining to overgrown foliage or dead or damaged branches and trees will soon be notified by the city of Huron.
In a reminder at Monday’s City Commission meeting, code enforcement officer Vic Waters said foliage must be trimmed back to the edges of alley rights of way and streets and to a height of 15 feet.
It must be trimmed to the edges of sidewalks and to a height of 10 feet. Dead or damaged trees must be removed.
After notice is received by the homeowner or occupant, the violations must be corrected within 14 days. However, if the work needs to be done by a professional tree trimmer, residents are asked to call Waters to make arrangements for an extension.
He can be reached at 353-8512 weekdays during regular business hours.
Waters said the alley right of way is generally 20 feet, although a few are 16 feet.
People are also asked not to grow anything but grass on the boulevard at street intersections to avoid visibility problems.
In other business, commissioners approved a variance request from Red Wilk Construction, 1562 Old Highway 14, to allow a chain link fence with three strands of barbed wire to remain as constructed.
When the hearing examiner considered it last week, it was brought to light that there are four other properties on Old Highway 14 with six-foot chain link fences and barbed wire. They are not in compliance with the ordinance, but may have existed before annexation.
Since the hearing examiner meeting, another 20 or so properties throughout town have been identified as having the same fencing and wire. They were likely grandfathered in when fence ordinances were rewritten.
Meanwhile, commissioners also approved a variance request from James Valley Veterinary Clinic and Scott and Rebecca Rink, 1207 Dakota Ave. S., to construct an addition four feet from the south property line where code requires a 10-foot side yard setback.
