The Huron Salvation Army is suspending the acceptance of all donations with the exception of furniture and appliances until Sept. 1 because of an overwhelming response from the community and surrounding area since construction of the new thrift store.
“Our storage and sorting room is so packed that the fire marshal has told us to clean it out and rearrange it,” said the Rev. George Parmeter, advisory board chairman. Also, he said the Salvation Army is in immediate need of volunteers to price and display items in the thrift store.
“We will be offering generous discounts to enable us to reduce our inventory while still making a little money in order to support the programs of the church operation,” Parmeter said.
The store is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.
Additional heavy-duty shelving will need to be installed in the receiving and storage room but will have to wait until the areas are cleaned out.
“We would like to get the room in some type of orderly condition before fair week hits,” Parmeter said. The thrift store always does good business during the State Fair.
The food pantry is still receiving donations. For more information, call the store at 352-7366 or Parmeter at 350-0654.
