Report: Huron police justified in killing sword-wielding teen
Posted: Wednesday, Mar 7th, 2007

SIOUX FALLS (AP) — Huron police officers were justified in fatally shooting a sword-wielding teen who killed his mother and injured an officer and two others, according to an attorney general’s report released Monday.

Sgt. Daniel Schlader and Officer Daniel Kight shot Joshua Gilchrist, 15, on Jan. 26 at his family’s house. They and Capt. Daniel Marotteck and Officer Scott Stiegelmeier acted appropriately, state agents concluded.

According to their report, the officers arrived just before 6 a.m. and were met at the door by Gilchrist’s 14-year-old sister, who was covered with blood from several cuts to her hands.

“She was screaming hysterically that her brother was trying to kill her mom,” the report states.

As Marotteck and Kight entered the house, Gilchrist — while screaming and holding a sword with a 24-inch blade above his shoulders — ran toward the officers and out the front door.

He attacked Kight, who was struck several times on the left arm and shoulder as he backed down the stairs. Kight pulled his gun, fired at Gilchrist and fell to the ground as the teen continued the attack.

Stiegelmeier, who was standing nearby, tried to disable Gilchrist with a Taser but the jolt hit both Gilchrist and Kight.

Schlader, who was walking toward the house, fired four rounds at Gilchrist and hit him twice.

The teen fell to the ground but rolled over, grabbed the sword and tried to get up, so Kight shocked him with his Taser.

According to the autopsy, Gilchrist was hit by three bullets and died from one that tore through several organs.

His mother, Betty Gilchrist, 49, died in the basement from stab wounds, including one that severed her right carotid artery, according to the report.

Rebekah Gilchrist, the sister, suffered cuts to her hands, as did a foreign exchange student living with the family, Danil Antonov, 15.

Kight was treated and released.

Jon Gilchrist, the father, was not home.

Both parents had been active in the Huron Municipal Band, and both of their children were members of the Huron High School band and orchestra.

Betty Gilchrist was the children’s librarian at the Huron Public Library.
