Charlotte Mudder, 78, of Avon

Charlotte Mudder, 78, of Avon, died Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at home following a brief battle with cancer.

Her funeral will be Saturday at First Baptist Church in Avon at 11 a.m.

Visitation will be at the church today from 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Arrangements are with Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Avon.

Charlotte Anne Odens was born Oct. 1, 1930, to Charlie and Jennie Agnes (DeRoos) Odens in Bon Homme County on a farm east of Springfield. In 1943 they moved to the family farm by Kingsburg. 

She graduated from Springfield High School in 1948. She attended Southern State Teacher College in Springfield earning a one year teaching certificate in 1949. She taught grade school at the Lincoln Country School west of Springfield for two years.  

She married Marvin Mudder Aug. 22, 1951, at Kingsburg. She was a member of First Baptist Church. They lived on various farms near Avon. They bought what became the family farm two and half miles east of Avon in 1965. In addition to raising her family, she spent many hours working on the farm, helping in the fields, milking cows with her sons and selling eggs and cream. She enjoyed gardening and canning the produce. She was an excellent baker.

In 1971 she began working as a nurse’s aide at Springfield Nursing Home and on Nov. 22, 1972, she was hired at Tyndall Good Samaritan Center. She worked as a certified nurse’s aide, medication aide and laundry aide. She was named the first annual Employee of the Year in 1991, CNA of the Year in 1999 and was awarded the Millie of the Year Award for her exceptional service in long term care by the South Dakota Health Care Association in 2004.

Her husband died in 1993 and in 1995 she moved into Avon. She moved to the Meadow View Manor in January 2008.

She is survived by 13 children, Janice (Terry) Smidt of Huron, George (Denise) of Fort Campbell, Ky., Melvin of Tyndall, Joyce (Jay) Borah of Huron, Dale (Annette) of Yankton, Jane (Gary) Gramkow of Olivet, Julie (Keith) Rothschadl of Scotland, Alan (Lori) of Avon, Larry (Brenda) of Avon, Joan (Greg) Doty of Wagner, David (Mary) of Garretson, Don (Marcia) of Avon and Jacque (Jeff) Liebl of Menno; 31 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three brothers, Frank (Peggy) of Springfield, Darrell (Elaine) of Avon and Chuck (Joan) of Forest City, Iowa; two sisters, Naomi (Fred) Hale of Sonora, Calif., and Carol (Harlan) Ferwerda of Springfield; two brothers-in-law, Alvin (Betty) Mudder and Jerry (Cherilyn) Mudder; and three sisters-in-law, Ilene (Bob) Pudwill, Miriam Johnson and Adella (Don) Massey.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a grandson; two brothers, Delbert in infancy and Phillip; and in-laws, Shirley Pudwill, Velda and Dewey Olsen, LeRoy Jochims, Roger Mudder and Arnold Johnson.
