Making a joyful noise

Modified: Wednesday, Nov 21st, 2007

A 33-voice Huron Music Club Chorus will present a program entitled “The Sounds of Music” at 3 p.m. Dec. 1 in the Centennial Stone Church.

The chorus, directed by Mile Pietz, will also join the Huron Symphony Orchestra for one song on Sunday, Dec. 2. The chorus will also sing several solo numbers during the orchestra concert in the high school auditorium.

There will be no charge for the choir’s holiday program and refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the program.

Any donations received, plus the funds from refreshments served during the Huron Concert Association programs are used exclusively to fund scholarships for students to attend summer music camps.

Some of the scholarship winners will also perform at the Dec. 1 concert.

The 2007 scholarship recipients are Audrey Wipf, McKayla Kleinsasser, Augustana Music Camp; Emily Baltzer, Carter Mack, and Matt Schneider, South Dakota State University All-State Music Camp; Amanda Hotchkin, 4-H Performing Arts Camp; Justin Wegenke, University of South Dakota Summer Music Camp; Lauren Kattner, Megan Larsen, Hannah Smith and Emma Smith, Crescendo Music Experience; and Drew Whitney, Brigham Young University Summer Music Festival.

During the symphony program, the chorus will perform one number with the orchestra, directed by Hans Peterson.

In addition, the chorus will sing several Christmas songs, under the direction of Milo Pietz.

Pietz, retired choral director at Huron High School, has directed a number of special groups. He also was the choir director at the First United Presbyterian Church for many years.

The accompanist for the choir will be Mark Neuharth.
