Brookings records sweep against Tigers

BROOKINGS – The Huron Tigers played their first varsity game in nearly three weeks because of weather postponements and cancellations, and the rust showed as the Brookings Bobcats swept a varsity/junior varsity doubleheader Thursday at Bob Shelden Field in Brookings.

In the varsity game, the Bobcats walked off with a 10-run margin victory in 6 innings, winning over the Tigers 11-1.

Huron starter Layne Wenzel went five innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits and four walks, striking out seven Bobcat hitters. Peyton Bischoff came in the sixth inning and only was able to get two outs before the Brookings offense added six runs on five hits and a walk.

Jack Pedersen smacked a double in the fifth inning as Huron tried to mount a rally, but he was left stranded at second base. Logan Leyendecker was the only Tiger hitter to reach base twice, with a pair of singles and two stolen bases.

Huron has a busy schedule over the next few days as the team hopes to get in enough games to qualify for the postseason after all of the weather-related games missed.

Friday, the club traveled to O’Gorman, and Monday, they will host Jefferson at Klock Field.

The junior varsity had played more recently than the varsity squad, but the Tigers’ JV team had been off since April 15 due to weather as well. They fared better against the Bobcat JV squad, though, with a late rally coming up just short in a 7-6 loss.

Brady Feenstra took the ball to open the game for Huron. He tossed five innings, allowing four runs on five hits and no walks, striking out eight. Jeremy Hofer pitched the sixth, allowing three runs on four walks and a hit, but striking out two Bobcats.

Gabe Waldner was the lone Tiger to collect two hits, with a pair of singles. Oakley Anderson and Hofer each had a single and a walk, while Nolan Stahly drew a walk and was hit by pitch.
