Posted

HURON — The Mount Vernon/Plankinton Titans earned a ticket to next week’s Class “A” State tournament Thursday night, with a gutsy 46-40 upset win over the Aberdeen Roncalli Lady Cavaliers at Huron Arena.

MVP, seeded 10th in the SoDak 16, led throughout the contest and held a 12-point edge early in the fourth period before the Lady Cavs began to hit from the outside.

Roncalli eventually got the margin down to three points, but were forced to foul in the closing moments and the Titans’ Emilee Fox was up to the challenge. Fox ended the game with 28 points and 11 rebounds - both game high totals - including a 5-for-six showing at the charity stripe in the final 90 seconds of the game.

As a team, Mount Vernon/Plankinton’s entire fourth quarter offensive output came from the free throw line.

In addition to Fox’s game, Reagan Rus addd 12 points and had eight rebounds for the Titans.

McKenna O’Keefe led the Lady Cavs with 17 points. In a game where 54 of the 92 field goal attempts came from behind the three-point arc, the game was decided at the free throw line, as the Titans were 12-20 at the stripe, while Roncalli only got two attempts, with O’Keefe making both of them.

The Titans will take a record of 18-5 into next week’s Class A State Tournament in Brookings. It will be the first trip for Mount Vernon/Plankinton since 2015 and the third time the co-op has gone overall.

Roncalli ends the season with a mark of 19-4.
