Tigers sitting seventh at state tennis tourney

RAPID CITY — Huron went 6-0 during the first round of singles at the Class A State Boys’ Tennis Tournament on Monday.

After going undefeated in the first round, the Tigers have three players who will play for fifth place today.

Roger Puterbaugh will close his high school career playing for fifth place in the first flight singles.

Puterbaugh, which was the seventh seed, opened the tournament with back-to-back 6-2 set wins against No. 10 Ty Sieber of Spearfish to advance.

In the quarterfinals, second-seeded Gage Becker of Yankton handed Puterbaugh a pair of 6-0 set losses, forcing him into the fifth-place semifinals, where he used an 8-6 win in a tiebreaker to get past sixth-seeded Matthew Hanson of Pierre 10-9.

Puterbaugh will play fifth-seeded Landon Levenhagen for fifth place today.

Dah Christ Moo earned the fifth seed for the Tigers in the third flight singles and opened the tournament with a pair of 6-1 set wins against No. 12 Gregory Grabow of Milbank.

Fourth-seeded Jadon Munson of Sioux Falls Christian recorded set wins of 6-2 and 6-4 against Moo in the quarterfinals. Moo rebounded to pull out a 10-8 win against No. 9 Devin Dodson of Pierre to reach the fifth-place match.

Moo will face No. 10 Cody Plank of Lennox for fifth place at No. 3.

Moo Gay was the fourth seed for Huron in No. 6 singles and opened the tournament with a pair of 6-0 set wins against No. 13 Austin O’Bryan of Spearfish.

Fifth-seeded Carter Schulz of Pierre used back-to-back 6-0 wins to get past Gay in the quarterfinals

Gay rebounded with a 10-7 win against ninth-seeded Gannon May of Aberdeen Roncalli to reach the fifth-place match, where he will face sixth-seeded Eli Plank of Lennox.

Eighth-seeded Hay Klu Moo Taw won his first match 6-4, 5-7 (10-6) against No. 9 Rudy Isburg of Spearfish at No. 2 and then took top-seeded Tyler Loecker of Mitchell to a tiebreaker in the quarterfinals. Loecker emerged with the win 6-7 (7-1). 6-3, 10-7.

Fourth-seeded Ryan Schulte of Yankton then eliminated Taw with a 10-3 win.

Seventh-seeded Lauy Kue Say used 6-4 and 6-2 set wins against No. 10 Shourya Goyal of St. Thomas More to win in the opening round at No. 4 singles.

Second-seeded Jack Hancock of Rapid City Christian then defeated Say 6-3 and 6-1 in the quarterfinals. Sixth-seeded Palmer Johnson of Aberdeen Roncalli ended the tournament for Say with a 10-4 win in the fifth-place semifinals.

After defeating ninth-seed Maguire Studer of Madison with scores of 6-0 and 6-0, eighth-seeded Lah Doh Soe of Huron tangled with top-seeded Keaton List of Yankton in the quarterfinals and suffered 6-2 and 6-1 setbacks.

Fifth-seeded James Woodward of Sioux Falls Christian ended the tournament for Soe with a 10-5 win.

All three of Huron’s doubles teams also opened the tournament with victories.

Puterbaugh and Taw were the seventh seed at No. 1 and combined for a 6-2, 6-3 win against No. 10 Spearfish.

Second-seeded Rapid City Christian used a pair of 6-3 wins to second the Tigersinto the fifth-place semifinals.

Huron’s duo of Moo and Say were seeded eighth for the second flight doubles. They dispatched No. 9 St. Thomas More 6-1 and 6-2 in the opening round.

Top-seeded Yankton then handed Moo and Say 6-1 and 6-0 setbacks in the quarterfinals. They were set to face fifth-seeded Sioux Falls Christian in the fifth-place semifinals.

Huron’s No. 3 doubles team of So and Hser Wah was the sixth seed and opened the tournament with 6-1 and 6-0 wins against Madison.

Third-seeded Sioux Falls Christian used a tiebreaker to win against the Tigers in the quarterfinals. The match score was 7-5, 3-6, 10-7.

With some of the doubles matches remaining on Monday evening, Huron was seventh in the 13-team standings with 164.5 points.

Rapid City Christian had 271.5 points to hold a slim lead over Mitchell for the top spot. The Kernels had 268 points. Yankton was third at 255.5, followed by Pierre at 224 and Sioux Falls Christian at 214.5.

The the state championships and all other placing matches will be decided today.
