Tigers tennis set for strong finish at state tourney

RAPID CITY — Finishing in the top half of the 13-team field at the Class A State Boys’ Tennis Tournament would be a fitting end for a Huron team that has just one senior, according to coach Tim Hedblom.

The Tigers will open play at 8 a.m., today at Sioux Park and Parkview Complex in Rapid City.

“I expect us to go out and play our best tennis of the season,” Hedblom said. “We want to have fun, play the way we are capable, and finish the season with a good finish.”

Senior Roger Puterbaugh leads Huron into the season-ending event. He has posted an 11-10 record this season at No. 1 singles and has teamed with junior Hay Klu Moo Taw to go 12-10 in No. 1 doubles.

“Roger is finishing up a very good high school career and I think in both singles and doubles he can do some really good things at the state tournament,” Hedblom said.

Taw, who plays No. 2 singles for the Tigers, is 9-13 this season, while sophomore Dah Christ Moo is 8-13 at No. 3.

Junior Lauy Kue Say has posted an 8-13 record at No. 4, while sophomore Lah Doh Soe is 9-12 at No. 5 and freshman Moo Gay is 13-8 at No. 6.

“I think that each of the players have a great opportunity to finish in the top 6,” Hedblom said. “If they each play the way, we know they can, they will have chance of making the podium.”

Dah and Lauy Kue have combined to go 8-12 this season in No. 2 doubles, while Lah Doh has teamed with sophomore Hser Wah to go 9-12 in No. 3 doubles.

Sioux Falls Christian is the defending Class A champion, while Yankton finished as the runner-up a year ago.

Huron was third last season, followed by Mitchell and Lennox.

“I think we are more than capable of finishing in the top 6,” Hedblom said.

This year’s state tournament will conclude on Tuesday.
