The ‘backpack battalion’

Posted: Saturday, Oct 6th, 2012

Volunteers throughout the community turned out Wednesday to help put together 302 backpacks for the Backpack Program which starts this week. In an assembly line fashion, six items are placed in each “backpack,” checked and then placed for delivery to schools. The program expects soon to have more than 400 children in the program once all of the paperwork is received from students. They served 381 parents by the end of last year.

In the next photo, students from Huron High School help break down boxes for recycling.

Next, each “backpack typically contains a couple of cereal items (cereal and oatmeal pictured), a can of soup, two pieces of fruit and a snack (microwave popcorn pictured.) However, due to donations over the summer, some of this week’s offerings may be different than what is pictured.

Next, the “backpacks” are sorted by school and delivered after being assembled every Wednesday. Current schools receiving backpacks include, Buchanan, Jefferson, Madison, Washington, the middle school, Head Start and Holy Trinity. Head Start hands out the backpacks on Thursday while the rest of the sites distribute on Friday.

And next, a pair of volunteers have packed a truck for delivery.
