JRWDD awards Beadle County grant to fix 3 bridges

Posted: Wednesday, Mar 20th, 2013

HURON Beadle County has been awarded $80,000 from the James River Water Development District board for berm repairs on three county bridges.

The repairs will consist of rebuilding the berms with compacted clay fill and placing drainage fabric and rip rap on each berm. The work will stop future erosion and avoid future flood damage, which will improve the water quality.

Beadle County will match the funds.

The district awarded a total of $91,707 in cost-sharing assistance at their board meeting in Huron last week.

The district awarded $11,707 to Putney Township and Brown County for installation of two culverts in a berm along the James River with flapgates and two culverts in the adjacent township road to improve drainage, floodplain management and water quality.

Meanwhile, the board also received an update on the Jamestown and Pipestem reservoirs from Brian Twombly, hydraulic engineer with the Army Corps of Engineers in Omaha.

The volume forecast for flow past the James River at the Jamestown gauge is 206,000 acre-feet, resulting in a high flow year as designated in the Water Control Manual for Jamestown and Pipestem.

The maximum combined releases are expected to be in the 750 to 1,200 cubic feet per second range.

The current plan is to hold Pipestem releases at or below 100 cfs until June 1, while preference is placed on evacuating the Jamestown flood storage.

Preference will be placed on reaching the June 1 Jamestown target elevation of 1,431 feet. Pipestem flood storage will be evacuated during the summer.

Expected summer Pipestem releases are in the 250 cfs range. This forecast is subject to change, depending on how the snow melts and additional precipitation that may fall.
