Six vehicles, locker checked after hits by drug dogs

Posted: Saturday, May 11th, 2013

HURON — Drug dogs from Huron and two neighboring counties alerted to six vehicles and one locker during a lockdown and search at Huron High School Thursday morning, a Huron Police Department public information officer said.

Officer Cory Borg said no illegal substances were found in the locker. Two vehicles were found to have trace amounts of marijuana and one vehicle had less than two ounces of marijuana in it. The vehicle operator was arrested for possession of marijuana.

Borg said nothing was found in the other three vehicles, but the operators admitted to the presence of illegal substances at an earlier time.

Police requested the help of law enforcement authorities in Spink and Jerauld counties as those sheriff’s offices each have one police service dog.

They are able to assist outside their agencies because all law enforcement officers and K-9s are certified through the state of South Dakota and not through their respective agencies.

The lockdown and search of high school lockers, some random classrooms and the parking lots were done in cooperation with Huron School District officials, Borg said.

The lockdown was initiated at about 9 a.m. and was lifted at about 11:35 a.m., he said.
