Volesky considers run for U.S. Senate

Posted: Monday, Sep 23rd, 2013

Ron Volesky

HURON — Former state legislator and one-time Democratic Candidate Ron Volesky (D-Huron) said today that he is considering a run for the United States Senate in 2014.

Volesky said in the wake of Senator Johnson’s announcement that he will not seek re-election that he is strongly considering a run for Johnson’s U.S. Senate Seat.

“I believe it is essential and of paramount importance that South Dakota maintains a strong presence in the United States Senate,” Volesky stated.

Volesky commended Senator Johnson for his many years of effective and outstanding service to the citizens of South Dakota and the people of the nation during his years in the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate.

“Senator Johnson has been an outstanding advocate for the citizens of our state and nation during his many years of service in the United States Congress, and we need to continue the vigilant representation of America’s middle class and those less fortunate in our society in order to maintain our strength as a nation,” Volesky said.

Volesky, who served 16 years in the South Dakota State Legislature in both the House and the Senate, said that he would run a vigorous campaign that would be issue oriented.

“While it is incumbent upon my candidacy to raise the necessary funds to run a winning campaign for the U.S. Senate, I believe that is a goal that we can achieve, and also I believe that we can run aggressively on the issues that are important to the people of South Dakota such as jobs, economic development, agriculture, education, and defending Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid while seeking substantive and effective ways to balance our nation’s budget and get the nation’s deficit spending under control,” Volesky said.

Volesky and his wife have four children. Volesky has been in a private practice of law in Huron for the past 33 years.
