HURON ó The Dakotaland Museum held a quilt show this past weekend, hailed as Grandmotherís Treasured Quilt Show. The quilts were displayed at the Centennial Stone Church on Saturday.

There were quilts of all styles and patterns, spanning the antique hand-stitched creations to modern examples of machine quilting. There was also a display of quilt fabrics, kits and tools that are now available in Huron at Java Hut Quilts and More.

Of the 33 quilts in the show, 17 were from the Dakotaland Museum and included one sewn in 1847, the oldest quilt out for viewing.

Six quilts and one rug were loaned by Louise Van Poll. The stitched rug, in a rosette pattern, was made by her great-grandmother Maria Freese of Wessington. Most of the others were made by her grandmother Carrie Freese of Wessington, who had a cottage industry taking in quilt tops from around the country and quilting the final product.

Dr. Karl Blessinger had four quilts on display, including an embroidered one made by his grandmother Lydia Gertrude Anderson as his baby quilt. The others were from individual quilters around the area.

Several visitors stopped by to enjoy these beautiful masterpieces and the Museum Director Rachel Farrell said all donations will be used to repair the large west window in the Stone Church.

ďWe had a wonderful variety of quilts,Ē Farrell said. ďThere were crazy quilts, a nine patch, three lone stars, several friendship or signature quilts, a couple grandmotherís flower garden designs and a few appliqued quilts among the collection. It really was a diverse display showcasing the art of quilting.Ē
