De Smet cruises past W-W

DE SMET — The De Smet Lady Bulldogs won their third game of the season in as many outings with a 70-14 victory against Wolsey-Wessington on Monday.

After holding the Lady Warbirds to just two points in the second quarter, De Smet carried a 29-6 lead into the second half.

Grayson Gruenhagen and Rylie Osthus each had nine points to lead the Lady Bulldogs, who received votes in the inaugural Class B girls’ basketball rankings. Kayli Buchholz and Amanda Poppen added eight and seven points, respectively.

Amanda Poppen and Kayla Anderson each had five rebounds to help De Smet to a 40-22 advantage on the boards. Shelace Albrecht had team-high totals with six steals and four assists.

Sidney Carey had six points to lead Wolsey-Wessington (0-2). Brittany Bergquist and Ashley Eggleston each had three points.

Bergquist also had seven rebounds, while Megan Eggleston and Bailey Zerfoss each had three steals.

De Smet will travel to play Iroquois today, while Wolsey-Wessington hosts Iroquois on Thursday.

Sanborn Central-Woonsocket 65, SBA 36

WOONSOCKET — Sanborn Central-Woonsocket, which is ranked No. 2 in Class B in the inaugural South Dakota Sportswriters Association girls’ basketball poll, opened its season with a 65-36 victory against Sunshine Bible Academy in a 281 Conference matchup on Saturday.

The Blackhawks led 23-5 at the end of the first quarter and 43-11 at the half en route to the victory.

Shelby Selland had 16 points to lead a balanced scoring attack for Sanborn Central-Woonsocket. Marissa Weber also reached double figures with 13 points.

Selland also had a team-high five rebounds, while Rachelle Moore had five assists and six steals.

Sierra Young and Sarah Pedersen finished with 13 and 10 points, respectively, for SBA (1-1). Pedersen led the way with 13 rebounds, while Young had four assists and Shana Moreland had five steals.

Sanborn Central-Woonsocket will travel to play Tripp-Delmont/Armour in Armour on Thursday, while the Crusaders will be at Faulkton Area today.

CLARK — With the help of 14 made shots from beyond the 3-point arc, Sioux Valley recorded 68-62 victory against Clark-Willow Lake, which is the No. 2-ranked team in the inaugural Class girls’ basketball poll.

Carley Peterson 26 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead three players in double figures for the Cossacks (2-1). Anna Keefe converted on six 3-pointers en route to 22 points and Tasha Halberson added 10 points.

Chynna Stevens finished with a game-high 32 points to lead the Cyclones (0-1). She also had 20 of the team’s 35 rebounds.

Mackenzie Huber added 16 points for Clark-Willow Lake.

The Cyclones were slated to host Lake Preston on Monday in Willow Lake and will be back in action Friday against Webster Area in Clark.
