SIOUX FALLS — Maxine Elizabeth Becker, 101, died Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at Southridge Care Center. Funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday at First Christian Church. The family will be present to greet friends for visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday at George Boom Funeral Home in Sioux Falls.
Maxine E. Cogswell was born on May 22, 1911, in Wolsey, to Mark and Mabel (Bigham) Cogswell. She grew up in Wolsey and graduated from Wolsey High School. She taught piano in Wolsey for many years. In 1940, she moved to Sioux Falls and began working for John Morrell and Co. as a secretary. While working at John Morrell, she met Bennie Becker.
She married Bennie Becker on Oct. 18, 1947, in Wolsey. She continued working for John Morrell until her retirement in 1975.
She was an active member of First Christian Church. She was the church pianist for 21 years. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Christian Women Fellowship. In her retirement, she enjoyed paying visits to neighbors and friends, having her hair fixed every other Tuesday and attending concerts.
She is survived by her sister in law, Phyllis Cogswell of Aberdeen; 16 grandchildren; many great- grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, one nephew and one niece.
Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Bennie; brother, Mark Cogswell; step children, James “Sonny” (Lillian Irene) Becker, Marilyn Iverson, and Dianne (Jack) Johnson; one step-grandson and one great-great-grandson. For the complete article see the 03-22-2013 issue.
