GLOUCESTER, Mass. – Elaine C. Smogard, 89, died Friday, March 29, 2013, in the Addison Gilbert Hospital.
Born on Dec. 26, 1923, in Huron, she was the daughter of the late C. Theodore and Edna B. (Snyder) Smogard.
She was a graduate of Huron High School, Huron College and the library school at the University of Illinois. After spending some time working at Beloit College in Wisconsin and the University of South Carolina she returned to school to earn her Master’s Degree in library science from Colombia University. Following her graduation, she was employed at Harvard University and Holyoke College until her retirement in 1969.
She was a member of the Cape Ann Historical Society and an active volunteer at both the Addison Gilbert Hospital library and Sawyer Free Library. She had also worked on the Archives Committee for the City of Gloucester.
She is survived by several cousins in Minnesota and many close friends.
Services will be held privately in the Riverside Cemetery. There are no visiting hours.
