TYLER, Minn. — James Howard, 83, of Tyler Minn., formerly of Ivanhoe, Minn. and Brookings, died Saturday, May 4, 2013, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Tyler Area Funeral Home. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in the St. Wilford’s Catholic Cemetery in Woonsocket.
He was a rancher, soldier, banker and provocateur. Born in 1929 on a ranch near Capa, the family eventually moved to Huron where he graduated from Huron High School in 1947. He was drafted into the Army in 1950 and served until his honorable discharge in 1952. He graduated from Huron College with a business and finance degree and was employed at the National Bank of South Dakota in Huron.
He married Catherine Ann Ball in June of 1954. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin Graduate School of Banking in 1970, having attended summer school for several years in Madison, Wis.
He is survived by his children, Michael (Barb), David (Oksana), Carol (Denny) Renken; James (Deno); and Scott (Amy); 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; sisters, Vernita Nicholson of Apple Valley, Minn., Barbara Voas of Rapid City, and Rita Meyers of John Day, Ore.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Ann Howard (Ball); parents, Guy and Esther Howard; sister, Margaret Peterson; and brother, Bernie Howard.
