REDFIELD — James F. “Duke” McFarlane Jr., 87, of Redfield, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, at the Golden Living Center in Redfield. Burial mass will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Saint John’s Catholic Church in Plankinton. The Rev. Steve Barnett will officiate. Burial will be in Mizpah Cemetery at Plankinton. Visitation will be Friday from 2 to 7 p.m. with a scriptural wake and rosary service at 5:30 p.m. at the Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield.
James F. “Duke” McFarlane Jr. was born on Dec. 13, 1926, to James “Doc” and Hazel (Guindon) McFarlane in Plankinton. He was raised and educated in Plankinton and graduated in 1945. He served in the Army from 1945 to 1946. He earned his degree in economics at the University of South Dakota.
In 1978, he married Mavis Lalley in Plankinton. They farmed near Plankington. He was a member of the Plankinton American Legion and served as past Post Commander.
He enjoyed negotiating prices, following the economic trends and hitch-hiking in his younger days.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Mavis; a son, James III (Maureen) of Minneapolis, Minn.; many cousins; two nieces and a nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
