HURON — Rozella DeVries, 103, of Huron, died Thursday, June 26, 2014, at the Prairie View Care Center in Woonsocket. Her funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Welter Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7 p.m.; or Monday morning one hour prior to the service at the church.
Rozella Elizabeth Johnston was born to Willie and Mabel (Kann) Johnston on July 9, 1910, on a farm north of Broadland. She attended school in Broadland through grade 10, and then moved to Huron where she started in the 11th grade; however, she developed Rheumatic Fever and was forced to drop out of school. She helped her mother raise chickens, plant gardens, cook, bake, and can fruits, vegetables and meats.
On Jan. 1, 1929, she married Art DeVries in Broadland. In 1934, it became impossible to earn a living on the farm, so Art attended a six-week refrigeration school in Sioux City, Iowa and started his own refrigeration business in Huron. She was a homemaker throughout her married life. Over the years she helped care for ill and elderly family members, and babysat for her grandchildren when needed.
She became a member of the South Dakota Century Club on her 100th birthday, awarded by the South Dakota Health Care Association. In October 2006 she moved to Country View Estates in Huron where she lived until September 2012 when she became a resident of Prairie View Care Center in Woonsocket.
She became a member of First United Methodist Church in Huron in 1935 (79 years) and was active in many of the church activities. She enjoyed needlework, creating doilies, gardening, and crocheting afghans.
She is survived by two children, Mavis Grace of Huron, and Voneta (John) Freese of Pipestone, Minn.; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; one nephew; and three great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Art, in 1991; son and daughter-in-law, Richard, 1993, and Marsha DeVries, 2008; son-in-law, Ernan Grace, 1996; one grandson; and brother and sister-in-law, Lester and Florence Johnston.
