SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Bryan Dell Rockwood, 49, of San Diego, Calif., died in a rock climbing accident in Idyllwild, Calif. on July 12, 2014.
Bryan was born on May 24, 1965 in Grinnell, Iowa to Stephen Dell and Jane (Streeter) Rockwood.
Bryan graduated from Los Alamos High School, Los Alamos, N.M. in 1983, and from Princeton University in 1987. His professional career included time with Investext, a division of Thomas Financial, where he was president of Thompson Financial Research, he then proceeded to NextLec Inc./ST3, a Chattanooga, Tenn. based streaming video start up. At the time of his death he was working at SAIC in San Diego, Calif., having served as Marketing Director for the Company’s Security and Transportation Technology Business Unit.
Bryan lived his too-short life to the fullest. He was a devoted musician and played numerous instruments with various bands through High School, College and post graduation. He was the director of the Princeton Triangle Club in his senior year. He loved the outdoors, particularly the Canyon Lands area of Utah where he loved to hike and explore. At his request his ashes will be scattered in these National Parks. He was an avid rock climber and marathon runner, having run many marathons, including the Boston Marathon in 2012. He was also a talented writer, having majored in comparative literature at Princeton, and at the time of his death he had just completed his first novel and was in the process of pursuing its publication. Bryan had a unique ability to relate to and enjoy the wide variety of cultures he sampled during his life, from New Mexico, to the Ivy League, to the rural south and, lastly, urban San Diego. He was a wonderful husband, father, son and brother and his buoyant spirit was a positive influence on all who met him.
He is survived by his wife, Heidi Rockwood of San Diego, Calif.; his daughter, Courtney Rockwood of Manhattan, N.Y.; his parents, Stephen Rockwood of San Diego, Jane Andrews (Larry) of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; sister, Susan Lofgreen (Derek) of Louisville Colo.; and her two sons, Joshua and Ryan and his stepbrothers, Michael Bryant of Denver, Colo., and Matthew Andrews of Ariz. and several uncles, aunts and cousins. Bryan was the step-grandson of Leonard and Vera Raether of De Smet and stepson of Cheryl Raether Rockwood, formerly of Iroquois.
A private family memorial service was held in San Diego, Calif. on Friday, July 18th.
The family requests that donations be made to the International Dyslexia Association, in support of Bryan’s nephew, Ryan.
