RAPID CITY — Three Huron players won during the opening round of the singles competition on Thursday at the State Tennis Tournament in Rapid City.

Michelle Johnson opened with a victory in No. 2 singles against Ella Graham of Madison. After dropping the first set 6-4, she won the second set 7-5 and posted a 10-5 victory in a tiebreaker.

In the second round, fifth-seeded Kaylyn Deiter of Aberdeen Roncalli recorded 6-0 and 6-1 set wins to move Johnson into the consolation bracket, where she received a bye and will face Diana Peck of Aberdeen Central in her next match.

Sierra Goergen, who is the No. 3 singles player for the Tigers, used back-to-back 6-3 wins to get past Alexa Bryan of Yankton in the opening round. She then used a 6-3 victory in the second set and a 10-7 decision in a tiebreaker to defeat Jess Ackert of Sioux Falls Washington to reach the quarterfinals.

Goergen will face third-seeded Kara Bunkers of Sioux Falls Roosevelt in her next match.

Huron’s Cassie Hedblom recorded a win against Laura Bryan of Spearfish in her first match in the sixth flight, but suffered back-to-back 6-0 losses against fifth-seeded Leslie Cope of St. Thomas More in the second round.

Hedblom then suffered an 8-0 setback against Beth Hildebrandt of Brookings in the consolation bracket to end her tournament.

The Tigers amassed 81 points during the opening day in singles to finish 12th in the team standings.

Sioux Falls O’Gorman led the event with 290, while Rapid City Stevens was second at 264 and St. Thomas More was third at 262.
