RAPID CITY — Sierra Goergen was the lone player for the Huron girls’ tennis team to earn a placing at the State Tournament in Rapid City.
Goergen reached the quarterfinals in the third-flight singles before being defeated by third-seeded Kara Bunkers of Sioux Falls Roosevelt with set scores of 6-1 and 6-0.
Goergen moved into the fifth-place match, where she was edged 9-8 by seventh-seeded Erica Hanson of Aberdeen Central in a tiebreaker to finish sixth.
Huron’s No. 2 doubles team of Erin Isackson and Cassie Hedblom reached the consolation semifinals before being eliminated.
After losing their first match against Watertown with set scores of 6-1 and 6-2, Isackson and Hedblom rebounded with an 8-3 victory against Spearfish. They then defeated seventh-seeded Sioux Falls Lincoln 8-4 to reach the consolation semifinals, where they suffered an 8-3 setback against Madison.
Huron’s No. 1 doubles team of Johnson and Goergen also recorded a victory in the consolation bracket before being eliminated. They opened the tournament with back-to-back 6-0 losses to top-seeded Sioux Falls O’Gorman, but then defeated Spearfish 8-2 in their next match.
Rapid City Central ended the tournament run for Johnson and Goergen with an 8-4 victory.
The Tigers finished the tournament with 98 points, which put them 14th with one day remaining.
Sioux Falls O’Gorman led the team standings after the second day of the three-day event with 577 points. Rapid City Stevens and Sioux Falls Roosevelt shared the second spot with 514 points.
Rounding out the top five in the 20-team event were Aberdeen Roncalli at 416 and St. Thomas More at 414.
