Tigers earn victory against Spearfish

Posted: Monday, Oct 8th, 2012

SPEARFISH — The Huron Tigers broke into the win column with a 21-15 victory against the Spearfish Spartans on Friday night at Lyle Hare Stadium.

“Anytime we can go out west and beat a very good team like Spearfish, it says something about our team,” Huron coach Mike Postma said.

“The Tigers played a very good game in all three phases — offense, defense and special teams.”

The Tigers built a 21-7 lead in the opening half, with Lucas Morrison and Tyler Kleinsasser scoring touchdowns on runs and Adam Zwanziger connecting with Justin Davis for the other touchdown.

“I thought in the first half of the game we came out and controlled the line of scrimmage, both offensively and defensively, and that was a huge factor in our win,” Postma said. “We talked going into the game that the team that ran the ball most effectively would win the game and we did that.”

Kleinsasser led Huron with 82 yards rushing on 16 carries, while Morrison had 16 carries for 58 yards and Zac Brown had 10 carries for 38 yards.

The Tigers were also able to find success with their passing game, as Zwanziger completed eight of 18 passes for 107 yards. He was able to spread the ball around, as six different players had receptions.

Morrison finished with three catches for 43 yards, while Collin Boehrns had a 28-yard reception. Also catching passes were Reagan Francom (12 yards), Hartman Katz (10 yards), Davis (9 yards) and Kleinsasser (5 yards).

Huron amassed 290 yards of total offense against the Spartans.

“We had several players really step up and play well for us, both offensively and defensively,” Postma said. “We had some players who were injured going into the game and we had three or four sophomores really step in and play well.

“Lucas Morrison played with a lot of heart in the game. He played with an injured ankle and was forced to come out of the game in the fourth quarter,” he said. “Lucas had several huge plays for us in the game. Zac Brown, a sophomore, came in and played very well for Lucas at the tailback position.”

Defensively, Francom led the Tigers with 16 tackles and a sack. Katz and Kleinsasser each had 12 tackles, while Katz also record a sack.

Aric Birkeland, Parker Hook and Davis all had sacks in the game for Huron. Morrison intercepted a pass at the goal line and returned it 60 yards to thwart a scoring opportunity for the Spartans (4-3), which helped the Tigers build its 14-point advantage in the first half.

Huron, which is now 1-6, will face Watertown (2-5) in its final home game of the season at 7 p.m. Friday at Tiger Stadium.
