Huron opens state tourney with upset in extra time

Posted: Saturday, Oct 13th, 2012

RAPID CITY — The Huron soccer team opened the 2012 State Tournament with a 4-3 upset against third-seeded Tea Area in extra time on Thursday in Rapid City.

Tea Area put the first goal on the board five minutes into the game, but the Tigers would net the next two goals to carry a 2-1 lead into the half.

Huron opened its scoring with an unassisted goal by Dah Dah. Eight minutes later he found the net again on a pass from Ka Neh Win.

Win stretched the lead for the Tigers to 3-1, scoring seven minutes into the second half.

Tea Area was able to get one of those goals back a minute later and the game 37 minutes into the second half to force the extra time, which consists of two 10 minute periods.

Win scored the game-winning goal eight minutes into the first period of extra time.

“The kids played an outstanding game,” Huron coach Gary Kasperson said. “We are starting to come around on our passing and communication. They worked very hard for it.”

Goalkeeper Jarrid Parsons stopped 14 of the 17 shots he faced from Tea Area. Huron had nine shots on goal.

The Tigers, who avenged a 1-0 loss to Tea Area during the regular season, will now face second-seeded Harrisburg in the semifinals at 11:30 a.m. today.
