VERMILLION (AP) — Isiah Old Lodge returned a fumble 64 yards for a touchdown and deflected the last pass of the game to preserve Winner’s 13-6 win over Tri-Valley Friday in the South Dakota 11B championship game.
Winner (12-0) had three goal-line stands and held the Mustangs (10-2) to 130 yards on the ground.
Old Lodge’s return with 6:42 left in the third quarter gave Winner some breathing room. Ben Connot’s 11-yard run and the PAT put Winner ahead for good early in the second half.
Tri-Valley’s Dominick Burggraff caught a 4-yard TD pass from Brett Page for a 6-0 lead. Page passed for 39 yards and the Mustangs ran for 235 yards.
It is Winner’s fifth state championship.
