Golden Eagles sweep Huron

RAPID CITY — The Aberdeen Central Golden Eagles spelled trouble for the Huron Tigers again Friday during the consolation semifinals at the Class AA State Volleyball Tournament.

The second-seeded Golden Eagles, who were upset by No. 7 Rapid City Stevens, used set scores of 25-18, 25-14 and 26-24 against Huron to earn a spot in the consolation championship match. It was the third sweep of the season for Aberdeen Central against the Tigers.

Lauren McCafferty led the attack for the Golden Eagles, who improved to 20-3, with 10 kills. Samantha Knecht finished with eight kills, while Amanda Tobin had five kills.

Defensively, Caitlin Rasmusson had six assisted and a solo block for Aberdeen Central, while Brianna Kusler had five assisted and one solo block and Knecht had five assisted blocks. Meggie Hanson and Knecht finished with 23 and 21 digs, respectively, and Kelsey Hannigan had a team-high 16 sets.

Katelyn Allerdings provided the majority of the offense for the Tigers, who are now 14-11, with 16 kills. Bailey Rathjen and Halee Allerdings recorded 13 and 12 digs, respectively, while Jacey Hupp had five assisted blocks. Lexi Eckmann had three assisted blocks and Mikayla Goergen had a solo block.

Goergen also led the way with 24 assists for Huron.

The Tigers will now face another District 3AA rival — Mitchell — in the seventh-place match at noon, MST, today. Mitchell holds a 2-1 advantage in the season series between the two teams.

Aberdeen Central will face top-seeded Sioux Falls O’Gorman for the consolation title at 1:45 p.m., MST, today.
