RAPID CITY — Senior Katelyn Allerdings made a run at the Huron High School kills record on Saturday as the Tigers closed the Class AA State Volleyball Tournament in the seventh-place match against Mitchell at Rapid City Central High School.
“Katelyn had a spectacular tournament,” Huron coach Shelly Buddenhagen said.
Allerdings finished the match with 30 kills, which helped her solidify her top ranking in kills per set at the state tournament and a spot on the all-tournament team.
Unfortunately, things didn’t go quite as well for the Tigers, who entered the tourney as the No. 6 seed. The Mitchell Kernels used set scores of 18-25, 27-25, 25-19 and 25-2 to hand Huron its third straight setback and claim the seventh spot.
“I thought our kids played really hard,” Buddenhagen said. “We really battled with two sets being won by just two points. We just couldn’t get a play to put away and couldn’t catch a break.”
Mitchell, which won three of the four matches it played this season against the Tigers, finished the season at 16-10.
Halee Allerdings and Lexi Eckmann finished with eight and seven kills, respectively, for Huron. Taylar Rotert had a team-high 25 digs, while Mikayla Goergen recorded 43 assists.
Katelyn Allerdings, Rotert and Goergen capped their high school careers for the Tigers at the tournament.
“All three seniors had a pretty solid state tournament for us,” Buddenhagen said. “This team has come a long way this season.”
