MITCHELL — The James Valley Christian volleyball team finished the Class B State Tournament two spots higher than it was seeded entering the tournament.

Parker, which entered the tournament as the top seed, used set victories of 25-20, 25-20 and 25-19 to defeat the Lady Vikings in the third-place match on Saturday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

“It was really quite an accomplishment for our team,” JVC coach Tim Nihart said. “We took on the top three seeded teams in the tournament. We knew we had a good opportunity in facing Herreid-Selby Area to reach the semifinals and have a shot at playing for the title.”

Although Parker, which entered the tournament as one of two undefeated teams, was able to record the sweep, it didn’t come without a battle from the Lady Vikings.

“It kind of shows you the caliber of team Warner is for them not to lose or come close to losing a set the entire season,” Nihart said of his team’s play Saturday against Pheasants. “Parker with one loss was just as dominant and for us to come out and almost win the first set was incredible. Who knows what happens if we win that first set.

“Then getting down 6-0 in the second set really hurt us. If that wouldn’t have happened we could have won that set,” he said. “In the third set I was very happy with the way we kept battling. We just didn’t have enough hitters to stick with them.”

Allison Sanner and Tessa Weeldreyer finished with 14 and 13 kills, respectively to lead Parker, which finished the season at 34-1.

JVC had a more balanced attack led by Jaclyn Loban with eight kills. Ariana Zuccaro finished with seven kills, followed by Kristen Williams with five kills and Tara Nihart with four kills. Betsy Nelson and Leslie Brondsema each had three kills.

Five players reached double figures in digs for the Lady Vikings. Loban had a team-high 18 digs, while Zuccaro finished with 16 digs. Also reaching double figures were Nihart with 14, Williams with 13 and Nelson with 10.

Nihart, who also had a team-high 20 assists and three service aces, was named to the all-tournament team for JVC.

“Tara had a really good tournament,” said her coach, who also doubles as her father. “She was a big part of our first round win and has played steady for us all year long.”

The Lady Vikings ended the season at 22-8.

“I am really happy for our seniors and veteran players,” Nihart said. “It is really hard to get to the state tournament, so I was really pleased for them to get back to the state tournament. It was a very successful season.”
