ABERDEEN — Perfection has been rewarded this year.
Warner landed two players on the first team of the Class B All-State volleyball team: Northern State recruit Rachel Rogers and Ashley Rozell. They led the Monarchs to the state championship, a 34-0 record and an amazing 90-0 record in individual sets during the season.
The other first-team players also come from programs that are statewide perennial powerhouses: Ashley Clemens of Northwestern, Samantha Boeck of Arlington, Amber Dysthe of Parker and Kellie Winckler of Andes Central. The teams are picked by the South Dakota Volleyball Coaches Association.
Here is more about the first-team.
Rogers: 6-foot-2 senior middle hitter. “Rachel has been an offensive leader for us and her explosive attacks have made her a fun player to watch this season,” Warner coach Kari Jung said. “NSU will be getting a player with a great work ethic and passion for the sport. She has the desire to continually learn and improve.”
Rozell: 5-foot-11 sophomore setter. “Ashley is the player she is because she has a love for athletics so she is constantly in the gym or outside touching a ball,” Jung said. “She has a high volleyball IQ so when she is given a game plan, she uses our hitters effectively and gets her job done. Ashley has a strong mental game and seems to play even better under pressure.”
Clemens: 5-foot-10 senior middle hitter. “Ashley’s competitive drive makes her a really good volleyball player — she hates to lose,” Northwestern coach Nora Groft said of her four-year starter with 994 career kills. “That desire, coupled with her athletic ability, allows her to run a variety of attacking routes from outside attacks to quick middle attacks to slides behind the setter.”
Boeck: 5-foot-11 junior middle hitter. She is a coach’s daughter who works hard on her game. “Samantha has really improved as a middle hitter for us this season,” Arlington coach Anita Boeck said. “She is seeing the floor so much better and her defense has improved as well. She isn’t satisfied with her performance level and she does what she can to make herself a better hitter, blocker, digger and server. She has a love for the game and her teammates.”
Dysthe: 5-foot-6 senior setter. When she thinks of Dysthe, these things come to the mind of Parker coach Jill Christensen: Great setting skills, emotional leader, quarterback on floor, team player who spreads ball around to all hitters, great work ethic, can block and attack the ball effectively as well as set, and effective jump server — “our spark plug who is our first server in every set.”
Winckler: 6-foot-1 senior middle hitter. “Kellie is a perfectionist; it angers her when she doesn’t do her best,” Andes Central coach Rocky Brinkman said. “That is why she works so hard. She is very athletic (track, golf and basketball as well) and is a great all-around student who stays involved in a lot of activities. And as busy as she she is, she still is able to maintain a 3.8 grade point average. She is the cream of the crop.”
