The Huron Tigers defeated the Brookings Bobcats 44-41 in varsity girls’ basketball action Saturday evening. Offensively, the game started off slowly for both sides, with Huron leading at the end of the first half, 14-9.

Tigers head coach Al Steffen said that offense is one of the areas he’d like to see his team improve on throughout the season. “We need to focus on our offense and learn how to keep our spacing,” he said. “A lot of it will just be them getting a feel for playing with one another to get the easy baskets.”

Both teams perked up by the start of the second half and scored 15 points in the third quarter, with Huron leading 29-24. The fourth quarter saw the Bobcats capitalizing on 3-pointers, but on defense they started committing more fouls under the basket, giving the Tigers a chance to turn the tide at the free-throw line.

Katelyn Allerdings knocked down 4 of 4 free-throw attempts, and led the Tigers in scoring with 14. Calla Rounds led the team in free-throws, hitting 6 of 8, and contributing a total of 10 points. Jazmin Newton scored 8 points, and Jacey Hupp added 7 with 4 assists. Leading rebounders for the Tigers were Rounds with 8 and Hupp with 5.

Steffen said the he felt the team played well. “We played hard; at the end there, a lot of it came down to free throws and we had Katelyn and Calla to knock them down.”

Leading scorers for the Bobcats were Emily Johnson with 15 and Lauren Coughlin with 11. Johnson hit four 3-pointers, all in the second half. Amelia Miller had nine rebounds. Coughlin led with five assists.

The Tigers will face Rapid City Stevens on Friday. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m., MST.
