BRANDON — The Huron wrestling team used 11 placewinners to capture the championship during the Brandon Valley Invitational on Saturday.
“As a team we wrestled pretty good today,” Huron coach Dan McCarty said. “After competing in the Rapid City Invitational and the Minnesota Christmas Tournament it was nice to get back in a tournament against South Dakota teams, who will be seeing later this season.”
The Tigers have won the Brandon Valley Invitational in previous years, but McCarty said this year’s title has a little more meaning behind it.
“In the past they’ve only had eight teams in this tournament,” he said. “Now they have 15 teams, which includes top teams from Class A and B, along with some tough teams from Minnesota. The competition is quite a lot better.”
Out of the 11 wrestlers that earned placings on Saturday for Huron, five of them reached the finals.
Wyatt Shillingstad at 113 pounds and Reagan Francom at 160 both won individual titles.
“Both were seeded No. 1 entering the tournament,” McCarty said. “Wyatt had a really good tournament. He beat a really good kid in the finals.
“Reagan also wrestled a very smart match in the finals against a good opponent,” he said.
Chet Glanzer at 126, Hartman Katz at 152 and Dustin French at 195 all finished second for the Tigers.
“All three of them ran into some very good wrestlers in the finals,” McCarty said. “But they were still going for the win.”
Tyler Kleinsasser was fourth for the Tigers at 182, while Trent Francom was fifth at 106. Connor Gose at 170 and Jeremiah Johnson at 220 were sixth, while Nick Christensen at 138 was seventh and Josh Waagen at 285 was eighth.
Next up for the Huron wrestling team is a dual at Madison on Thursday. The junior varsity match will start at 6:30 p.m., followed by the varsity at 7:30 p.m. The Tigers will then host Pierre on Friday at Huron Arena. For the complete article see the 01-06-2013 issue.
