HURON — The Huron Tigers girls’ basketball team made a couple of second half runs to try and get back into the game but they came up short Saturday evening losing 44-29 to Sioux Falls Washington who remained unbeaten at 8-0.

The Tigers struggled offensively, being held to single digits in all four quarters while shooting just 27 percent from the field, and making just 2 of 18 three-point attempts.

The Warriors also weren’t as sharp shooting as they missed all 12 of their three-point attempts and shot just 30 percent from the field.

However, Sioux Falls Washington did have an edge in rebounding as they grabbed 18 offensive rebounds to Huron’s 10 and also got to the free-throw line where they made 16-of-29 compared to just 5-of-10 for the Tigers.

Sydney Koel led all scorers with 11, including going 7-for-10 from the free-throw line, while Denae Veldkamp finished with 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field.

For the Tigers, Calla Rounds had eight points on 4-of-8 shooting while Jasmine Newton and Katelyn Allerdings each added six.

Koel led her team in rebounds with 10 and Allerdings matched that total for the Tigers.

Huron (1-6) will be home for a pair of games next week as Tuesday they host undefeated Aberdeen Central and on Thursday they host 5-1 Pierre.

Sioux Falls Washington cruised to a 60-35 victory against Huron in the sophomore game on Saturday.

Jessica Tschetter led the Tigers with 14 points. Kiana Larson had eight rebounds and four steals.

Sioux Falls defeated Huron 61-34 in the freshman game.

Kaci Schimke led the Tigers with 17 points and four steals, while Cameron Schroder had 12 points and seven rebounds and Sara Skorheim had 10 rebounds.
