No. 2-ranked Aberdeen Central gets past Tigers

HURON ó Aberdeen Central, which is ranked No. 2 in Class AA, stayed perfect on the season with a 56-45 victory against the Huron Tigers on Tuesday night at Huron Arena.

The Golden Eagles, who improved to 9-0 overall and 6-0 in the Eastern South Dakota Conference, were able to pull away for good in the second half after sustaining a pair of Huron rallies in the opening half.

Aberdeen Central threatened to break it open in the first quarter, but the Tigers responded and trailed just 11-9 heading into the second stanza.

The Golden Eagles built another sizable lead in the second quarter, but Huron answered with another run to climb back in it. The opening half ended with Aberdeen Central holding a 25-23 edge.

With 18 points in the third quarter, the Golden Eagles pushed their lead to 43-34 heading into the final eight minutes of play and the Tigers were never able to recover.

Sara Hiederbaumer finished with a game-high 19 points for Aberdeen Central, while Samantha Knecht and Brynn Flakus added 13 and 10 points, respectively.

The Golden Eagles finished with a 36-30 advantage on the boards, with Flakus grabbing nine rebounds.

MaKayla Goergen was the lone player to reach double figures for Huron (1-7, 1-4) with 11 points. Brittany Steffen converted on three 3-pointers for nine points, while Taylar Rotert had eight points and Sarah Carr added seven points.

Calla Rounds, Jacey Hupp and Goergen all had four rebounds.

Aberdeen Central edged Huron 47-43 in the sophomore game.

Sami Zell led the Tigers with 12 points, while Carr added 10 points.

The Golden Eagles won the freshman game 66-29. Cameron Schroder led Huron with 17 points, while Kaci Schimke had 10 points.

The Tigers return to action Thursday with a 7:30 p.m. game against Pierre at Huron Arena.
