HURON — The Huron Tiger Wrestling team posted a 47-19 victory Friday evening against the Watertown Arrows to move their Eastern South Dakota Conference dual match record to 6-1 trailing the only team that has beaten the Tigers — Pierre earlier in the season.

Veteran head coach for the Tigers, Dan McCarty, had a feeling how the dual might go, but even he got a surprise on the night.

He expected the Arrows to score points in the early matches of the evening, but he hoped that when senior Hartman Katz took the mat the Tigers would still be in striking distance and even though the Tigers trailed 19-9 going into the match, McCarty got what he wanted from the first seven matches that included sending two eighth graders, two freshman (one of which was wrestling his first varsity match) and a sophomore against a much more seasoned group of Arrow wrestlers.

“Earlier in the season we had given up some technical falls in those weights to Watertown,” said McCarty. “But tonight we wrestled much better.”

In the seven matches the Tigers got pins from Wyatt Schillingstad, a junior at 113-pounds while junior Chet Glanzer earned a 10-7 decision at 126-pounds.

But just as noteworthy for the Tigers was that in the five five matches the Tigers gave up just 19 points and weren’t pinned in any of them.

A classic example was that of eighth grader Pywe Der who was wrestling in his first varsity match as he steeped in for the injured eighth grader Nick Christensen.

Similarly at 106 pounds eighth grader Trent Francom forced a decision, at 120 pounds freshman Jesse Mikrut forced a major decision, and at 132 pounds sophomore Tyler Skogstad forced a decision.

In all, Watertown left nine points on the mat in the five matches that they won.

Der scored just a point during the 11-1 loss but by staying off his back kept the arrows from scoring an additional two points for a pin or forfeit.

Those efforts early on gave the senior-heavy back end of the Tiger lineup plenty of time to catch up.

They did just that, outscoring the Arrows 38-0 picking up five pins, a technical fall and a decision to close out the match.

It was a great way to end their home matches as the final four wrestlers all picked up pins.

The run began with the senior Katz at 152 who picked up a pin with a second period pin, which was followed by freshman Bailey Schoenfelder’s decision at 160-pounds.

That pulled the Tigers within one-point in the team scores 19-18.

However, the points kept coming in bunches for the Tigers as they picked up a technical fall 21-6 from senior Reagan Francom at 170 pounds followed by junior Tyler Kleinsasser‘s second-period pin at 182 pounds which began the first of four pins.

At 195 pounds senior Dustin French got his pin in the first minute of the match as did sophomore Jeremiah Johnson who finished off his opponent in the first 48 seconds.

Senior Matt Halter capped everything off with his pin in the second period to push the team score to 47-19.

The quartet of seniors that includes Katz, Reagan Francom, French and Halter finished their home season in impressing fashion.

The Tigers still trail Pierre in the ESD race and barring an upset the Tigers will probably settle for second this season.

They have one remaining dual next Saturday at Aberdeen Central.

Today the varsity will wrestle at the Aberdeen Invitational while the junior varsity will wrestle at Groton’s varsity meet.
