Huron to host 2014 American Legion State Baseball Tournament

Posted: Tuesday, Feb 5th, 2013

HURON — The 2014 South Dakota American Legion State Baseball Tournament will be held in Huron.

The South Dakota American Legion Athletic Commission selected Huron for the event, which was being sought by four other communities – Sioux Falls, Pierre, Brookings and Mitchell – during the bidding process on Jan. 27 in Pierre.

“By being the host, the Huron baseball program will get great exposure in the state, as well as an opportunity to compete for a state title,” said JT Fisher, who is the head coach for the Huron High School spring team, as well as the Huron Post 7 American Legion team. “There is a huge amount of support for baseball in Huron right now, and it’s a great thing to see.

“Several other communities in South Dakota have noticed as well, and they know that Huron baseball will be a force to be reckoned with for the next several years,” he said. “Our goal at the Huron Area Baseball Association is to build the preeminent baseball program in the state, and I’m certain that goal will be reached.”

Megan Benker of the Huron Chamber and Visitors Bureau assisted Fischer in making the presentation to the commission. Also providing support for the presentation were Peggy Woolridge of the Huron Chamber and Visitors Bureau, Brad Cranston and Barry Cranston of the Huron Area Baseball Association, along with LaRon Klock of the Huron Parks and Recreation Department. Letters of support were also submitted by Huron Mayor David McGirr along with city commissioner Mark Robish and former Minnesota Twins player and coach Al Newman, who was a guest speaker at the Huron spring baseball banquet this past year.

“A great amount of legwork from some great supporters of the baseball program went into making this a success for Huron,” Fisher said. “Without these people, this opportunity would never have happened for us.”

Several improvements and upgrades have been planned at Memorial Stadium in preparation for the state event. Improvements in the works include a new outfield fence, along with a remodeled locker room and bathroom upgrades.

The 2014 South Dakota American Legion State Baseball Tournament is scheduled July 30-Aug. 3.
