HURON — The Huron gymnastics team established a new Huron High School record en route to finishing third at the Eastern South Dakota Conference Meet, which was held Saturday at the Tiger Activities Center.
The Tigers posted a score of 138.075, putting them behind Watertown, which won the event with a 148.150, and Mitchell which had a 143.200 to finish second.
“I am pleasantly surprised with our score, the girls have worked really hard,” Huron coach Julie King said. “They deserved a lot of the scores they got today. I am really proud of the girls.”
Rounding out the field of teams were Brookings at 137.775, Pierre at 137.550, Yankton at 136.550 and Aberdeen Central at 136.225.
The top five finishers from each event and the all-around received All-ESD honors.
Jessica Waldner was the lone Huron gymnast to earn All-ESD honors. She used a score of 9.300 to finish second on the balance beam.
“She’s been working really hard throughout the week,” King said of Waldner. “She did what she needed to do, stay on the balance beam.”
The top half of the finishers in each event on Saturday qualified for the state meet, which is slated for Feb. 15-16 in Rapid City.
The Tigers had several gymnasts that earned spots in the state meet.
“Today is a huge accomplishment in itself,” King said. “First of all, hosting the meet is a lot of stress and second of all, the girls pulled it together and had a really good day.”
The floor exercise proved to be the strength for the Tigers on Saturday, as it has been for much of the season.
Jessica Waldner was seventh on the floor exercise for Huron with a 9.100, followed by Hailey McCune with a 9.025. Kelsey King finished in a tie for ninth with a 9.000, while Jordan Waldner was 14th with an 8.95.
“We shined on the floor,” King said.
McCune was ninth for the Tigers on the vault with a 9.175 to qualify for state, while Kelsey King used an 8.5 to finish 14th on the bars and Tessa Musil was 21st with an 8.375.
Jordan Walder and Musil claimed spots No. 14 and 15 on the beam for Huron, with scores of 8.75 and 8.475, respectively.
Kelsey King led the Tigers in the all-around with a score of 33.875 to finish 17th, while McCune was 21st at 33.500.
Huron will travel to Mitchell for a dual on Thursday before heading to the state meet.
