HURON — The Huron girls’ basketball team used a 54-46 victory against Brandon Valley on Saturday at Huron Arena to put together back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

Saturday’s win, which avenged an earlier loss to the Lynx, comes after the Tigers defeated Yankton 48-43 on Thursday.

“It shows that things are starting to come together,” Huron coach Al Steffen said of his team’s first winning streak. “We want to be playing our best basketball at the end of the season and we are getting there.”

The Tigers used four consecutive 3-pointers, including back-to-back shots by Jazmin Newton, to close the opening quarter with a 16-8 advantage.

Jazmin, Brittany (Steffen) and Bailey (Rathjen) hit some threes there in the first quarter, which really got us going and the rest of the girls really fed off that,” Steffen said. “We shot the ball well, too. We were over 50 percent shooting, which is better than normal for us.”

Four consecutive free throws, which included two as a result of a technical foul, by Brandon Valley’s Allie Koehn allowed the Lynx to work their way back into the contest during the second quarter. Huron’s lead was shaved to one, at 30-29, but a basket by Jacey Hupp and a short jumper at the buzzer by Katelyn Allerdings gave to the Tigers a 34-29 lead at the half.

Brandon Valley battled back to within a point during the third quarter, but Rathjen’s second 3-pointer of the game staved off the Lynx’s attempt at the lead.

Huron would score the final seven points of the third quarter to carry a 47-39 advantage into the final quarter.

Five of the seven points for the Tigers in the final quarter came from the free-throw line. Brandon Valley would get no closer than eight points the rest of the way.

Rathjen and Allerdings each finished with 10 points to lead a balanced attack for Huron, which improved to 4-14 overall and 4-8 in the Eastern South Dakota Conference. Newton and Sarah Carr added nine and eight points, respectively, while Steffen and Calla Rounds each had six points.

Allerdings also had seven rebounds to help the Tigers to a 29-28 edge on the boards.

Koehn finished with a game-high 26 points and nine rebounds for Brandon Valley, which is now 4-14 and 4-8 in the ESD.

Huron will now be off until traveling to face Mitchell in a 3 p.m. game on Saturday at the Corn Palace. Brandon Valley plays at Aberdeen Central on Friday.
