SIOUX FALLS (AP) — The National High School Athletic Coaches Association has named the 2013 NHSACA Coach of the Year winners. To be considered for this award a nominee has been determined to have outstanding coaching longevity and win-loss records, championship years, awards received and service to the coaching profession and to the athletes of the State of South Dakota.

The 2013 Coach of the Year winner from South Dakota was Gary Munsen, Mitchell High School, Boys’ Basketball Coach of the Year. He was honored at the National Awards Banquet held at the NHSACA 48th Annual Meeting/Seminar in Des Moines, Iowa on Wednesday, June 26, 2013. This annual event is attended by athletic directors and coaches in 19 sports from throughout the United States.

Other finalists from South Dakota were: Tom Culver, Avon High School in the sport of football; Linda DeBoer, Miller High School in the sport of volleyball; John Nyhaug, Viborg-Hurley High School in the sport of boys’ track & field; Craig Black, Custer High School in the sport of girls’ track & field; Tom McGough, Miller High School in the sport of boys’ cross country; Vicky Fisher, Watertown High School in Special Sports-Gymnastics; Bob Billotto, Eureka High School assistant in boys’ sports; Carmen Robinson, Yankton High School assistant in girls’ sports; and Gene Brownell, Aberdeen Central High School Athletic Director.

Also inducted into the 2013 NHSACA Hall of Fame were Galen Busch of Mission and Virg Polak of Watertown.
