JVC teams qualify for state: Waldner wins varsity boys’ race to lead Vikings

WEBSTER — James Valley Christian qualified both its boys’ and girls’ cross country team for the state meet by finishing third in both divisions during the Region 1B Meet on Wednesday in Webster.

Jayden Waldner won the boys’ varsity race for the Vikings, who finished with 27 points. Aberdeen Christian captured the boys’ team title with 16 points, while Great Plains Lutheran was second at 20.

Waldner turned in a winning time of 18:05 for the Vikings to edge Derek Boekelheide of Northwestern, who finished at 18:05.25.

Kedric Brantner was eight for JVC at 18:54, while Ryan Wager was 18th at 19:53.

Also qualifying for the state meet from Region 1B were Mitchell Dobson of De Smet, Carter Langbehn and Tate Haider of Wolsey-Wessington and Craig Mallong of Hitchcock-Tulare.

Dobson finished 10th at 19:22. Langbehn was 15th at 19:49, while Haider finished at 19:55 and Mallon clinched the final qualifying spot in 20th at 20:02.

Austin Kemnitz of Wolsey-Wessington narrowly missed making the state tournament field, finishing 21st at 20:03.

Northwestern had 16 points to edge Estelline by three points for the girls’ team title on Wednesday. James Valley Christian was third at 35 to claim the final team spot in the state meet from Region 1B.

Khiree Held finished sixth overall at 16:50 to lead the Lady Vikings, while Mallory Johnson was 15th at 17:19 and Tierra Decker was 19th at 17:35.

Also qualifying for the state meet were Amanda Gehm of De Smet, Ashley Robinson of Wolsey-Wessington and LaMour Binger of Hitchcock-Tulare.

Gehm was eighth at 16:59, Robinson was 12th at 17:12 and Binger was 18th at 17:32.

The Class B State Meet is scheduled Oct. 26 in Rapid City.
