MITCHELL — Behind a 26-point performance from senior guard Macy Miller, the second-ranked Mitchell Kernels cruised to a 72-40 victory against the Huron Tigers at the Corn Palace.
After watching Mitchell open the game with an 11-2 run, the Tigers battled back to cut their deficit to three points at 13-10, as Taya Butterfield and Sarah Carr scored on back-to-back possessions.
The Kernels responded with an 8-2 run to close the opening quarter with an 18-12 lead.
After outscoring the Tigers 24-10 in the second quarter for a 42-22 lead at the half, Mitchell held Huron to just two points in the third quarter to carry a 65-24 lead into the final quarter.
At one point in the third quarter, Miller had her game-high 26 points, while the Tigers had 24 points.
Taylor Volesky finished with 20 points for the Kernels, who improved to 9-0. Emma Schmidt and Torrie Michels added eight and seven points, respectively.
Carr finished with 19 points to lead Huron, which is now 4-6, while Lexi Eckmann put in 11 points off the bench.
The Tigers will now be off until Jan. 24, when they host Harrisburg as part of a doubleheader at Huron Arena.
