MITCHELL — For the second straight game, the Huron boys’ basketball team turned up the heat defensively during a 74-40 victory against the Mitchell Kernels on Thursday night at the Corn Palace.

After opening a 31-15 lead in the first half, the Tigers limited their Eastern South Dakota Conference foe to just four points in the third quarter and carried a 53-19 lead into the final quarter of play.

“I thought we played well from start to finish last night. I thought we were engaged in what we wanted to do offensively and what we wanted to take away defensively,” Huron coach Tim Buddenhagen said. “It was a tremendous team effort against an opponent that has a tremendous tradition.”

In the previous two outings for the Tigers, Justin Decker has had a limited role offensively because of being double teamed in the post. Huron’s offense was fueled by the play of the 6-foot-7 senior on Thursday, as he finished with a game-high 20 points.

“Justin had a big night, the guys got him the ball in good spots on the floor and he did an outstanding job getting to the boards,” Buddenhagen said. “I thought Will Carr had a good night shooting the ball, Hayden Busch went to the boards well and found open teammates and JP Noonan was solid with six assists and six steals.”

Will Carr finished with 12 points for the Tigers, including a pair of 3-point field goals, while Caleb Carr also reached double figures with 11 points and Tre Henderson added nine points.

Huron was dominant on the glass, pulling down 37 rebounds compared to just 15 for the Kernels. Decker led the way with nine boards

“Defensively we are getting better,” Buddenhagen said. “Our communication on the floor still needs to improve, but it helps when you hold teams to one shot. We have been rebounding the ball a lot better since the Watertown game.”

Beau Brown had nine points to lead Mitchell, while Connor Morgan and Carter Brewster each had seven points.

The Tigers, who improved to 8-1 overall and 6-1 in the conference, return to action on Tuesday, when they travel to face Pierre, which was undefeated and tied for the top spot with Huron in the Class AA rankings in the most recent South Dakota Sportswriters Association poll.
