HURON — With three individual champions, the Huron wrestling team finished third at the West Central Invitational on Saturday in Hartford.
Aberdeen Central won the 12-team event with 273.5 points, while Sioux Falls Roosevelt was second at 205. Huron was third at 189, followed by Sioux Falls Washington at 146 and Mitchell at 145.
“It was a really good day for us, we came out and wrestled really well,” Huron coach Dan McCarty said.
“It’s been a good week for us. It’s the first time we’ve wrestled on back-to-back nights since the Rapid City Invitational and we didn’t compete really well then.”
Claiming championships for the Tigers on Saturday were Wyatt Shillingstad at 120 pounds, Chet Glanzer at 132 and Tyler Kleinsasser at 195.
“All three of our champions had a good tournament,” McCarty said.
“They had some tough matchtes in the finals.”
Trent Francom also reached the title match for Huron at 113, but finished second, while Bailey Schoenfelder at 182 and Josh Waagen at 285 were both third.
“Trent upset a good wrestler in the semifinals, Schoenfelder lost to a defending champion and Waagen wrestled a really good tournament and has shown a lot of improvement,” McCarty said.
Also earning placings for the Tigers were Chip Shillingstad at 106 (fourth), Colin Simons at 160 (fifth) and Connor Gose at 170 (sixth).
“Our other kids were a match away from getting a placing,” McCarty said.
“We saw lots of improvement.”
Huron will be back in action Thursday, when they travel to face Tea Area and Yankton at 5 p.m. Thursday in Yankton.
