Titlewinners decided at SDGA Junior Championships

HURON — The final four champions were crowned during the second and final day of the South Dakota Golf Association’s Junior Championships on Tuesday at Broadland Creek Golf Course.

Max Donohue of Sioux Falls used a 67 through the final 18 holes of play to win his third consecutive title in the boys’ division for ages 16-18 in come-from-behind fashion.

Donohue trailed Alex Shattuck of Sioux Falls by two strokes heading into the final round after shooting a 72 on Monday. He finished with a two-day total of 139 to put him four strokes in front of Shattuck, who shot a 73 on Tuesday.

Jace Guthmiller of Yankton finished third, one stroke behind Shattuck, with a 144. Rounding out the top five were Greg Koehn of Brandon at 146 and Drew Mahowald of Watertown at 147.

Brandon Haber of Huron shot nine strokes better during the second round and used a 96 to finish the tourney at 201.

Katie Bartlett of Pierre needed a victory on the first hole of a playoff to secure the championship in the girls’ division for ages 16-18. She had a 77 on Tuesday, which was four strokes off the pace she had the previous day.

Sydney Bormann of Parkston, who carded a 76 on Monday in the opening round, turned in a 74 on Tuesday to force the playoff.

Kalie Trautman of Clear Lake was third, just one stroke behind the leaders at 151. Ashley Eggebraaten of Sioux Falls and Kelsey Johnson of Sioux Falls were fourth and fifth, respectively. Both had scores of 152.

Huron’s Cassidy Entwisle matched her score of 89 from the opening round to finish the tournament at 178.

Using a six-stroke improvement on the second day of the tournament, Will Grevlos of Sioux Falls won the boys’ division for ages 14-15 with a 146. Jacob Lee of Mitchell was second at 151, followed by Andrew Van Gerpen of Pierre at 152.

Rounding out the top five were Bryce Hammer of Sioux Falls at 155 and Zane Swenson of Brandon at 161.

Nolan Wiegel led the trio of Huron golfers in the boys’ division for ages 14-15. After shooting an 88 on Monday, he turned in a 78 on Tuesday to finish at 166.

Henry Rubish of Huron improved three strokes with a 95 in the final round to finish at 193, while Carson Hruby had a 201.

Brooke Piearson of Brookings used an 81, which was four strokes better than her score in the opening round, to pull away for the victory in the girls’ division for ages 14-15. She finished the tournament at 166, which put her nine strokes in front of Rapid City’s Natalie Young, who was second with 175.

Jade Burr of Belle Fourche was third at 179, followed by Sydney Wirebaugh of Aberdeen at 181 and Sophie Schwartz of Box Elder at 185.
