The deadline for submitting paper topics for the 18th annual West River History Conference is Aug. 15. The conference will be held Sept. 23-25 at the Surbeck Center on the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology campus in Rapid City.
Presenters are invited to share their family stories. Any topic relating to the history of the region is welcome as the subject of a presentation. The collected papers of the conference are published annually in a permanent bound volume available for purchase by schools, libraries, museums and other interested parties. Prizes for the best papers in adult and student categories will be awarded. The Bob Lee Award, named for the noted South Dakota historian and journalist, honors the best paper on frontier military history.
Topics should be submitted with a title, brief description and biographical sketch of the presenter by Aug. 15 in order to be included in the program. Please include the presenter’s name, address, phone number and e-mail address. Papers should be limited to 20 to 25 minutes in length. Presenters planning to use electronic media of any kind must include this information in the original query. Papers must be double-spaced and contain research documentation.
Presenters need to submit three copies of their papers or an electronic copy for the judges. Papers without appropriate documentation (footnotes or endnotes plus a bibliography) will not be considered for prizes.
