The Huron Debate and Interp Team traveled to the McGovern Speech and Debate Tournament Nov. 16-17 in Mitchell.
“We did have some good things happen at this tournament,” said head coach Mitch Gaffer. “We are putting more interpers in the top half of the division and we were able to get our first debate trophy in Policy Debate this weekend.” In Junior Varsity Policy Debate, Maddy Gohn and Alexander Zell went 2-2 and placed fourth.
“If we can keep our work level up, I’m sure we can break out in LD and Public Forum Debate soon,” Gaffer said.
In Novice Oratory, Karina Ward placed fifth, Cassidy Stevens placed 15th and Ben Brown placed 17th. There were 42 entrants in the division.
In Duet Interp, Troy Berg and Ben Halbkat placed ninth out of 21 in the division.
In Serious Interp, Sarahi Luna and Maddy Klein tied for 20th and Maddy Gohn placed 24th, out of 52 entrants in the division.
“We are still seeing steady improvement in debate, but I know we are still behind where we want to be,” Gaffer commented. “We will have to focus more on practice rounds than case writing to develop our speaking style to place better.”
Overall, the Huron team placed ninth out of 18 teams at the tournament.
“I still feel like we need to increase our work level if we want to place in the Central Forensics Conference.”
The next tournament for the HHS Debate and Interp Team is the State Oral Interp Festival Nov. 30 to Dec. 1 at Yankton.
