Spink County Coalition offers free course in strengthening families: Seven week program planned Sundays from Jan. 20 through March 3

Posted: Friday, Jan 4th, 2013

Do you ever wish you could take a break from your busy schedule to spend time together with your child? Do you get frustrated and feel like your youth just won’t listen? Would you like to help your child develop skills to handle peer pressure for a positive future? The Spink County Coalition, in conjunction with SDSU Extension would like to offer you the opportunity to be involved in the Strengthening Families program free of charge.

The Strengthening Families Program 10-14 will be held for seven consecutive weeks each Sunday from 1:30 to 4 p.m. from Jan. 20 through March 3. Snacks are provided. These free classes are sponsored by the Spink County Coalition and led by trained facilitators.

Strengthening Families Program for Parents and Youth 10-14 not only provides an opportunity to talk with other parents about stresses a child may be facing but also provides parents with an opportunity to spend uninterrupted time with their children.

Parents and youth will explore topics such as love and limits, peer pressure, supporting goals and dreams, and family communication. Don’t worry — you won’t be sitting around while someone lectures to you the whole time! These are active sessions. The first hour, parents and youth meet separately. Parents engage in discussion about situations that may occur at home and stresses their youth may face in the adolescent years. Youth engage in learning games to discover how to reach a goal, resist peer pressure and to understand how to positively communicate with their parents. The second hour, parents and youth are brought together to work on family projects and have fun together. Along with free snacks, childcare for younger children and time together as a family, prizes will be given out weekly.

To learn more or to register for the Strengthening Families Program 10-14, please call Lori Mundstock at (605) 450-1834 or (605) 472-0845, or Le Ann Wasmoen, Spink County Coalition Coordinator at (605) 450-1385. The registration deadline is Jan. 15 and classes are limited to 10 families — so sign up soon.

Research shows that protective parenting improves the relationship between parents and youth, and decreases the level of family conflict, contributing to lower levels of substance abuse. The Strengthening Families Program for Parents and Youth 10-14 (SFP 10-14) is a seven week parent, youth, and family skills-building curriculum designed to prevent teen substance abuse and other behavioral problems, strengthen parenting skills, and build family strengths. SFP 10-14 is designed for parents or caregivers and their children ages 10 to 14.
