The Huron High School Debate and Interp Team traveled January 18-19 to the Watertown Speech Fiesta Tournament.
Overall, the team placed eighth out of 27 teams attending from South and North Dakota. First place went to Sioux Falls O’Gorman, second to Aberdeen Central and third to Sioux Falls Washington.
Head coach Mitch Gaffer said that it was the biggest tournament the team has attended so far.
“In addition to every South Dakota forensic program attending, we faced tough competition from North Dakota schools like Fargo North, Fargo Davies, Shanley and Wahpeton,” he said.
“We faced tough interp programs such as Sioux falls O’Gorman and Lincoln, who again dominated the interp division final rounds.”
Gaffer said he was pleased with Huron’s performance.
“I’m proud of how our students responded to facing the best in the region,” said Gaffer.
The placings were as follows: in Dramatic Interp, Maddy Gohn finished 16th out of 53 entered in the division.
In Humorous Interp, Troy Berg finished 16th out of 36 entered in the division.
In Duet Interp, the teams of Ben Halbkat and Troy Berg and Maddy Klein and Maddy Gohn were two of three teams tied for 11th out of 24 duet teams in the division.
In Novice Policy Debate, Abbey Reese and Maddy Gohn went 3-2 and finished sixth.
In Novice Public Forum Debate, Maddy Klein and Ben Brown went 3-2 and finished 11th, and Dylan Stahly and Alexander Zell went 3-2 and finished 12th.
Gaffer said he was pleased with the performances. “Although we didn’t place high in any particular debate or interp division, we maintained some strong performances throughout. I believe that’s why we were still able to finish in the top third of teams attending the tournament.”
The Debate and Interp Team’s next tournament is Lewis and Clark Invitational in Yankton on Jan. 25-26.
